Yippee! Round One of Testing is OVER!!

Students were able to successfully complete the first round of state testing this afternoon. Most were very relieved to have this out of the way!

Tonight's Homework: Read Lesson 6.4 so you'll be ready for tomorrow's lesson. Also, be sure to complete both sides of the pink worksheet.

No Homework Tonight!

Students began this year's state testing in math today. While a few students finished the test today, most will be able to finish it by the end of the class period on Wednesday.

Tonight's Homework:
None!

Our Notebooks Are Lighter!

Students cleaned out unnecessary papers from their notebooks today, making them much neater, and hopefully, lighter.

Because we will be taking the state test for math on Tuesday and Wednesday, students will receive a lighter load of homework this week.

Tonight's Homework:
Page 778 ( 1 - 63, FCO ). Also, be sure to bring calculators to school tomorrow. Most importantly, get a good night's rest!

Graphing Inequalities on the Coordinate Plane

We extended our understanding of inequalities to the coordinate plane and reviewed the rules for graphing linear inequalities. A part of this process includes a check step, where a point on the plane, but not on the line, is chosen to be used in evaluating the inequality. If the resulting statement is true, the side of the graph that includes the point is shaded. If the resulting statement is false, the opposite side of the graph is shaded.

Tonight's Homework: Lesson 6.5 ( 15 - 57, FCO, and 70, 71 ).

Chapter 5 Test is Taken in Class Today

Students took another test (I know, can you believe it?) in class today. It was a test designed to familiarize students with multiple choice test taking. This is important, as we will be taking the first round of state math tests next week.

Tonight's Homework:
Read Lesson 6.3, and then complete the assignment. Lesson 6.3 ( 12 - 34, FCO and 41 - 44 ).

Wednesday, January 24, 2007

Graphing Multi-Step Linear Inequalities

This is a review lesson that extends what has already been covered in lesson 6.1 and in pre-algebra. Be careful when multiplying or dividing by a negative number, as you must also remember to change the nature (direction) of the inequality symbol.

Tonight's Homework: Lesson 6.2 ( 15 - 34, FCO )

Tuesday, January 23, 2007

Chapter 4 Retest Today

Students retook the chapter 4 test in class today.

Tonight's Homework: Complete the chapter 5 review on pages 324 - 326. Questions 13 - 15 are not assigned. In addition, you may do the Chapter 5 test (page 327) for extra credit. See yesterday's blog entry for specifics.

Monday, January 22, 2007

Graphing Inequalities

We reviewed the types of problems that will be on the chapter 4 and chapter 5 tests, to be given on Tuesday and Thursday this week. Students then reviewed the specifics required to solve single-step inequalities, and to graph the solutions to these types of problems.

Tonight's Homework: Lesson 6.1 ( 22 - 58, FCO and 66, 67 ). In addition, students need to complete the Chapter 5 review (pages 324 - 326 ), but not problems 13 - 15, by Wednesday. Extra credit will be given for completing the odd problems plus #30 of the chapter 5 test on page 237 of the book.

More Real World Applications of Linear Equations

Students were given a piece of licorice and they recorded the length of the rope after every bite, in hopes of seeing whether the data they collected represented a linear function or not. The rest of this activity will be completed at home, when students measure the amount of water they drink per sip.

Tonight's Homework: Finish the "Let's Party" worksheet and do the 13 problems on page 819.

Applying Linear Functions to the Real World

Today's lesson reviews the major points found in Chapter 5 by applying it to real life situations. Unfortunately, this means tonight's homework is mainly centered around story problems.

Tonight's Homework: Page 818, all 11 problems.

Determining Linear Relationships from Scatterplots

Today's assignment combines skills from lesson 5.4 (best-fit lines and correlations) and using the slope-intercept form to determine whether a set of data actually describes a linear function.

Tonight's Homework: Read Lesson 5.7 and then do 5.7 ( 11 - 22 all, and 31 - 33 ).

Writing Equations in Standard Form

School started two hours late today, due to snow and freezing temperatures. As a result, classes were only 25 minutes long. We spent class time going over how to write equations in standard form using integer coefficients.

Tonight's Homework:
Read Section 5.4, and be sure you understand the differences between positive correlation, negative correlation, and relatively no correlation. In addition, read Section 5.6, and then do 5.6 ( 18 - 442, FCO and 51 - 53 ).

Writing Linear Equations When Given the Slope and One Point

As we continue building on our understanding of linear equations, we explored the idea on how we can easily write equations for lines when we know the slope and the y-intercept. If we consider the y-intercept to be a point, then we can substitute the x and y values into the slope-intercept equation to determine what b will be for the equation. We worked through many equations and students felt fairly comfortable with the main ideas of this lesson.

Tonight's Homework: Lesson 5.2 ( 12 - 41 FCO, 48 and 49 ) and page 291 ( 1 - 13 all ).

Snow Cancels School!

Classes were canceled today due to snow on the ground. Hope you are enjoying the unexpected day off!

Tonight's Homework:
None, unless you didn't complete last night's homework!

Wednesday, January 10, 2007

Class Shortened Due To Living Voices Assembly

Because of the "Living Voices" assembly about Anne Frank, classes were shortened today. Students collected data from stacking cups on top of each other, and then shared this data with a friend.

Chapter 4 tests were returned today. Because the scores were so varied, we agreed that all students will retake this test in about a week, and the better score of the two scores will be recorded in the gradebook.

Tonight's Homework: Make a line graph of the data you collected in class today. Then determine the equations for each of the lines.

Tuesday, January 09, 2007

Chapter 4 Test Taken in Class Today

Students turned in homework and then took the chapter 4 test.

Tonight's Homework: Read over sections 5.1 and 5.3, and be sure you understand what is said in each of the sections.

Barbie Bungee Jumps at Monroe!

It was a perfect day for Barbie to bungee jump into the courtyard. Unfortunately, only half of our Barbie dolls got to take the plunge. Hopefull the rest of the dolls will get to jump soon.

Tonight's Homework:
Complete the pre-test and study for the chapter 4 test, which will be given in class on Tuesday. Also, remember to bring your extra credit report about a specific woman's contributions to math, science or engineering to class tomorrow.

Analyzing Barbie Bungee Jump Data

We continued working with our Barbie Bungee Jumping Data today, and revised our predictions as to how many rubber bands it will take to allow Barbie to jump safely from 400 cm. Each member of the class made a prediction, and that data was shared with the class.

Tonight's Homework:
Study for the chapter 4 test, which will be given on Tuesday. Also, finish the Barbie worksheet (both sides) and the 4 tasks that go along with this. All Barbie work is due on Monday.

Barbie Bungee Jumps at Monroe!

We continued our Barbie Bungee Jumping data collecting today during most of the class period.

Tonight's Homework: Page 267 (all problems). The chapter 4 test will be given in class on Tuesday, January 9th.

Extra credit reports are due by Tuesday, January 9th.

Welcome Back!

After reacquainting ourselves with where our seats are and when the extra credit is due, students began working on the Barbie Bungee Jump activity. In groups of three, students began collecting bungee jumping data with their chosen Barbie. This activity will continue tomorrow in class.

Tonight's Homework: Pages 264-266, even. Extra credit reports are due by Tuesday, January 9th,
