Spring Break is Officially Here!

Students turned in their unit projects today, and those who did so were issued an extra credit challenge. These students worked in groups to try and figure out the "End of the World" problem. Most students were able to figure out a pattern to the problem, and had to decide whether it was advantageous to finish the problem over the break.

Tonight's Homework: None, unless you missed class this week, and then you need to mail me your red vine/lemonade work and/or the candy combinations work that was due by class time today. If you wish to earn extra credit for the problem you started in class today, be sure to complete the work and have it ready to turn in on Tuesday, April 2nd. Have a relaxing break. Be safe if you travel!

Work Day to Complete the Unit Projects

Students were given the entire period to complete the Candy Combinations assignment and the analysis portion of the Red Vine/Lemonade activity. Those who used their time wisely were able to complete most of these assignments in class today, leaving them with little homework tonight. A few students were able to complete both projects today.

Tonight's Homework: Be ready to turn in completed work for Candy Combinations, Red Vines and Lemonade activities when you come to class on Friday.

Clear Solo Cups? Let's Have a Party!

Students were asked to drink their math assignment today, and collect data while they did this. Most of the class period today was devoted to giving students time to complete different components of the unit project, which will be due at the end of class on Friday, March 22nd.

Tonight's Homework: Work on your red vines project, lemonade project and candy combinations worksheet. Remember, you will have time in class to work on this on Thursday and Friday.

Test over Direct and Inverse Variations, Take Two

Students took a second version of the test over direct and inverse variations today in class. Hopefully, scores will be higher than they were two weeks ago!

Tonight's Homework: Complete questions 1 and 3 of the Candy Combinations worksheet you received in class today. (The rest will be discussed in class tomorrow.)

Eating Red Vines Relates to Math How????

Using the weekend homework, we reviewed for tomorrow's test. Afterwards, we did the first part of a work sample activity that required that students collect data related to the length of a red vine after each bite taken. This data was recorded in a data table and then turned into a graph. More work on this will be done in class on Wednesday.

Tonight's Homework: Be sure to study for tomorrow's test. Finish the data table and graph of your red vine information if you did not do so in class this morning.

Applying Inverse and Direct Variations to Every Day Situations

Students completed a review activity that used the math concepts we've been studying and applied them to real-life situations. This should prepare them for next Tuesday's unit test.

Tonight's Homework: TWMM pages 62 - 64, all 7 problems.

Pi Day, 2013

To celebrate π day, students measured the radius and diameter of cookies, and then calculated the circumference and area of the cookie. Afterwards, students completed a variety of review problems, helping them prepare for next week's test. Tonight's list of homework seems very long, but students had 40 minutes of class time to complete it, and most students were able to complete 3 out of 4 of the assignments.

Tonight's Homework: Complete the Pi Day, 2013 worksheet. Complete the Dimes and Nickels worksheet. Complete Zap It 2 worksheet. Do ACE 3 ( 32 - 39 ).

The Cost of a Field Trip

Using the cost of a class field trip, students compared inverse variations with linear relationships. Specifically, students learned that, in an inverse variation, doubling the independent variable halves the dependent variable.

Tonight's Homework: Finish the rest of problem 3.3 and then do TWMM ACE 3 ( 10 and 11 ).

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

Using Distance, Rate and Time to Model Inverse Variations

We completed problem 3.2 in class today, which found them investigating the nature of inverse variations in familiar contexts, and comparing them to linear relationships.

Tonight's Homework: TWMM ACE 3 ( 3 - 9 and 28 ) and Zap It 1 worksheet. (Be sure to do all parts of each question on the worksheet.

Looking at Functions

Students learned vocabulary about domain and range, and how to record it accordingly. Afterwards, we used situations, such as rectangles with fixed area, that can be modeled by inverse variation relationships. Students had approximately 20 minutes to work on homework during class today.

Tonight's Homework: Finish problem 3.1 and then do TWMM ACE 3 ( 1, 2, and 12 ). If you didn't finish the Nickels and Dimes worksheet in class, please finish that, too.

The Winter Trimester Ends Today

Students received feedback related to how they did on yesterday's test. We reviewed how to solve direct and inverse variation problems. Students spent the last few minutes of class cleaning out their notebooks and preparing them for the third trimester.

Tonight's Homework: None.

Test over Graphing Linear Inequalities, Direct and Inverse Variations Taken in Class Today

Students took the last test of the trimester today. Hopefully, these scores will allow students to end the trimester on a strong performance.

Tonight's Homework: None.

Reviewing for Tomorrow's Test

Students worked in groups to complete a graphing activity, where they hopefully came up with a picture that looks something like an eye with eyelashes. We also reviewed one more time for tomorrow's test over graphing linear inequalities and solving equations that are either direct or inverse variations.

Tonight's Homework: Complete problems 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 on the pink review worksheet. The other problems are extra credit. Study for the test!

Wow! Class Was How Long?

Our class was extremely short today, due to our special "International Day" event that took place in the morning. Students began working of the unit project handout, which requires following a set of graphing directions to create a picture on the coordinate grid.

Tonight's Homework: Complete the graphing linear inequalities worksheet and the sheet related to graphing, problems 1 - 4. Question 5 is extra credit.
